Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey,
the garrigue and the sun in Provence
Stroll through the village…
– HISTORICAL SAINT-VALLIER –
Many of you come to Saint-Vallier on Sundays for its market on the Grand-Pré, or stop for a walk.
But there are also many of you, inhabitants of the village, who don’t know the place where you ultimately live…
Did you know that our town has a very rich history and heritage?
– Don’t forget to preserve our village and its surrounding nature by taking care not to throw anything on the ground, and by leaving the stones of the buildings in place; also respect the people who take care of their homes and flower their surroundings –
So take the time one day soon, to stroll through the old village. Don’t hesitate to look up to notice the pulleys still in place above the windows; windows which are in fact only old haylofts. But don’t forget to look further down too! Because old stones are also found on sidewalks and gutters, and on door frames.
Get your kids involved by asking them to help you find the dates on the door lintels!
They will be happy to investigate!
They can write their findings on the sheet to download and print. You can then take a picture of the results of their research and send it to us by e-mail; your little budding historians will share their pleasant work with the Pastorale & Patrimoine association (safeguarding and promoting traditions and heritage in Saint Vallier de Thiey).
They should also have an eye for the rings in the walls that were used to tie up the horses!
Through its narrow streets, you can discover the remaining parts of the walls and the medieval gates that protected the village from invaders.
